Rotarians

The Oakland Rotary Club is a service club with a long history of helping our community. In addition to being part of the International effort to eliminate polio by the year 2000, the local chapter has several worthwhile projects that bring the community together in a special way. Our primary fund-raiser, selling our famous ROTARY FRIES, allows us to purchase food, toys and clothing for over 400 families in need each Christmas.

Trout Unlimited

The Youghiogheny Chapter of Trout Unlimited is dedicated to preserving cold water habitat for all species of trout and other fish.

Garrett Mentors, Inc.

Garrett Mentors, Inc., is a not-for-profit organization which provides a school-based mentoring program that encourages caring adults to be mentors to children in Garrett County elementary schools who come from homes with challenging family situations. As Study Buddies, once a week during the school year, they eat lunch together, do homework, work on a school project, play educational games, talk, etc., all while developing a caring relationship. Mentors instill the importance of good grades and higher learning; share their knowledge and experiences; teach skills needed to succeed in life; provide stability; instill values; build confidence and self-esteem; help the child discover their strengths; and set goals and achieve dreams. Studies have shown that attendance, grades, attention in class, respect for teachers and peers and overall attitude toward learning all improve because of our program.

SPECIAL NOTE: We are holding our second annual fundraiser on September 18, 2010 at Ridgeview Valley from 5-9 pm. It is a Barn Dance and BBQ with music by Johnny Moore and Stephan Moylan, silent auction, raffles, and guest bartenders. Lions

We're a service club involved with the community with our big fundraiser being the concession stand at Southern High School. We're also famous for our chicken barbeque dinner at the Garrett County Fair. Proceeds from fundraisers go toward local community charities. We're very oriented toward assisting people with vision problems.
