Garrett Mentors, Inc., is a
not-for-profit organization which provides a school-based mentoring
program that encourages caring adults to be mentors to children in
Garrett County elementary schools who come from homes with challenging
family situations. As Study Buddies, once a week during the school
year, they eat lunch together, do homework, work on a school project,
play educational games, talk, etc., all while developing a caring
relationship. Mentors instill the importance of good grades and higher
learning; share their knowledge and experiences; teach skills needed to
succeed in life; provide stability; instill values; build confidence and
self-esteem; help the child discover their strengths; and set goals and
achieve dreams. Studies have shown that attendance, grades, attention in
class, respect for teachers and peers and overall attitude toward
learning all improve because of our program.
